Player 4 — Ron “Chopper” Harris
RON “CHOPPER” HARRIS
Brutal tackles and the name Ron Harris go hand-in-hand. His uncompromising and tough style of play earned him the nickname ‘Chopper’ over the years. He joined Chelsea as a junior and became a stalwart at the club clocking up an astonishing 795 appearances over a 18 year period. During his tenure he won several honours namely the League Cup in 1965, the FA Cup in 1970 and the European Cup in 1971. The aforementioned FA Cup final against Leeds, which is regarded as one of the most brutal finals ever, cemented Harris’s reputation as a tough, no-nonsense defender. The teams met at Wembley where the game ended 2–2 — and such was the physicality of the game that the pitch was deemed unfit to host the replay and the FA decided to stage the event at Old Trafford. The second encounter proved to be more violent and physical than the first. Harris took out Eddie Gray early on in the game, Norman Hunter traded punches with Ian Hutchinson and Eddie McCreadie made a flying kick to Billy Bremners head…more clashes, knees and headbutts followed! The match was reviewed by a modern day referee who estimated that a total of six red cards and twenty yellow cards would be issued in today’s game. Oh yeah and Chelsea won 2–1!
On playing against George Best, Harris said ‘He’s the one player I couldn’t get near, the best I played against, I was told to go everywhere with George Best. One day he’d given me a right chasing. I felt dizzy at half-time’. Tommy Docherty said, “I thought I told you to mark him closely?” I’d tried, but by the time I got near, his team-mates were already shaking his hand. I asked, “What do you want me to do? Break his leg and get sent off?” Doc said, “Yes! They would miss him a lot more than we’d miss you!”’
So did he? ‘No chance, you had to catch him first.’
He did manage to get his man in this clip though with a “slight foul” according to the commentator.
